Membership of the Ambulance Service Institute is open to all employees of a NHS Ambulance Service and Non-NHS personnel who are engaged in Pre-Hospital Care, such as Voluntary First Aid, First Medical Responders, Private Ambulance Services, Military Medical and Industrial First Aid/Medical personnel, etc, who hold a current First Aid certificate or higher qualification issued by a recognised body such as the 'British Red Cross Society' and/or the 'St Johns Ambulance' and who are being regularly trained in their duties.

The objectives of the Institute are: -

To promote, advance and encourage the education and training for the benefit of the public of persons engaged in the Ambulance Service and subject, thereto, to extend such education and training to members of the public generally.

  • To hold examinations from time to time to test the knowledge and proficiency of applicants.

  • To hold conferences and meetings for the discussion of professional affairs, interests and duties.

Initial membership entry is normally at Student level, with progression to the grades of Licentiate, Associate, Graduate and Fellowship, being achieved by successfully passing the examination of each grade. Successful candidates are presented with the Institutes Certificate for the relevant grade, which is a recognised Professional Qualification. Examinations are held as and when required. A new modular distance-learning package for 'Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Technician' is now available and which may not require a final traditional type of examination.

Student members are required to have progressed to the Licentiate grade within three years of joining. There is no time limit by which members of other grades, have to progress to the next grade. It is left entirely to your discretion to apply to sit the examination when you consider that you are ready to do so. Members can do their own home study on the recommended material, or some ASI Branches run local courses.

The Education & Training Sub Committee is currently working on an 'Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Responders Course and a 'Community Responders' Course, together with a National Central register of Responders.

The 'Ambulance Service Institute' (A.S.I.) was formed by members of the National Health Service Ambulance Services in 1976 by the amalgamation of three previous Institutes, the 'Institute of Ambulance Officers' (I.A.O.), the 'Institute of Certified Ambulance Personnel' (I.C.A.P.) and the 'National Institute of Ambulance Instructors' (N.I.A.I.). It has members throughout Great Britain and in various Ambulance Services abroad.

Membership of the A.S.I. was restricted to NHS Ambulance Service employees until 1998 when in order to comply with the spirit of the 'Equal Opportunities Commission' in Training, Qualifications, Career Prospects and Enhancement, membership was expanded to Non-NHS personnel to accommodate adult members of the voluntary First Aid Societies, Armed Forces Medical/First Aid personnel, Private Ambulance Services, First Responders etc, who are engaged in Direct Patient Care, Ambulance Control/Communications, and/or Ambulance Management.
